RELMA in ICRAF
For more than two decades, the Regional Land
Management Unit (RELMA) promoted various
technologies and approaches aimed at decreasing
poverty and enhancing food security in eastern and
southern Africa. After three years operating as a project
within the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), RELMA was
closed in December 2006.
It is hoped that RELMA's approach, experience and knowledge --
highlighted in the RELMA review series below -- will persist in the individual
and institutional memories of its hundreds of partners and clients, to which we are very grateful.
Finally, we wish to acknowledge the substantial contribution of RELMA staff over the years and
the generous support of the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida), which made
RELMA possible.

Policy Briefs
Working Papers
This brief provides an overview of RELMA's history and legacy, focusing on publications and
core approaches, including networking and capacity building.
This brief takes a close look at how and why rainwater harvesting is catching on across Africa,
and introduces a new continent-wide decision-making tool to help policy makers quickly and
easily identify appropriate RWH interventions.
This brief describes an African-style CA, developed by RELMA and its partners, that is aimed
at increasing water use efficiency, rather than maintaining soil cover. Farmer education and
training is helping this new technique to catch on across eastern and southern Africa.
This brief examines RELMA's efforts, building on traditional knowledge systems, to identify and
develop a role for livestock keeping in poverty reduction and sustainable land management
strategies.
